Overcoming Social Media Overwhelm: People are tired of fake connections

Social Media has become exhausting over the years and the longing for organic connection is there there. Whatever platform you use, social media is powerful tool that when used strategically, it can propel your small business to new heights. But how do you do that when you see the post about people becoming tired of social media? (Kind of an oxymoron when you say it outloud, people posting on social media about being tired of social media) Here are 5 new ways to think about social media to help your audience overcome overwhelm and introduce people into your business ecosystem.

1. Ask this question and know the answer

What makes them tick? You need to understand your audience inside and out. Who are they? What do they care about? What problems do they have that need solving? When you know the answers to these questions, you can tailor your content to speak directly to them. And when your content resonates, engagement naturally follows. They don’t feel the overwhelm of a forced and fake connection. People are very critical about authenticity. Do your research, but most importantly say it in a way that you would say it. We were surviving pre-AI.

2. Quality Over Quantity—Because We’re Not Just Posting for Posting’s Sake

It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that more posts mean more engagement. But let’s be real—nobody wants to be bombarded with content that feels like filler. Instead, focus on creating high-quality, valuable content that your audience will find useful or entertaining. I have unfollowed accounts for posting too much, have you? If every post is a sale, girl bye.

3. Engage Like You’re Having a Conversation, Not a Monologue

This is one of the most important tips I can share. I am guilty of a post and run, but that not the way to start building relationships. Have you ever been in a conversation where the other person is just talking at you, not with you? Yeah, it’s not fun. The same goes for social media. Engagement is a two-way street. Don’t just post and ghost. Respond to comments, ask questions, and encourage discussions. When your followers feel heard, they’re more likely to stick around—and even spread the word about your business.

4. Use Analytics—Your Secret Weapon

Ya’ll know I was going to add a little something about data. Let’s be honest, guessing what works on social media is like throwing spaghetti at the wall and hoping it sticks. Instead, use analytics to track what’s working and what’s not. Tools like Facebook Insights, Instagram Analytics, and Google Analytics provide you with the data you need to refine your strategy.

5. Consistency Is Key—Yet So Is Authenticity

Consistency helps keep your business top of mind, but don’t confuse consistency with being a robot. Your audience wants to connect with the real you. Show some personality, share behind-the-scenes content, this makes people feel like you’ve let them in! People ask me about dance season all the time because I post about my dance mom life. It has nothing to do with CX, but it shows that I am a real person. Remember to let your brand’s voice shine through. People do business with people they like and trust—so be someone they want to hang out with, even if it’s just online.

Social Media is Powerful!

Social media engagement is more than just likes and comments—it’s about building relationships, establishing trust, and creating a community around your brand. By understanding your audience, focusing on quality content, engaging authentically, using data-driven insights, and staying consistent, you can leverage social media to not just grow your business, but to thrive.

Think of it like this, if people are overwhelmed with social media and the inauthentic relationships, this it the time to show up authentically. Start small and work your way up. You don’t have to share your life, but share something. One lesson you can take from Beyonce is that she doesn’t share much of anything and people crucify her. She shows up, sales something and then goes back to not responding, posting, or engaging. It’s kind of disappointing.

In this situation, don’t be a Queen Bey, be a Rihanna. Be strategic, be authentic, and watch your business flourish.
